Driver medical frequency — the rules
How often do I need a D4 / HGV medical?

Group 2 (HGV / LGV and PCV) licences are valid to age 45 with no routine medical before then. From 45 you renew every 5 years, and from 65 every year — each renewal needs a D4 medical. You also need one when you first apply for the licence.

At what age do HGV and bus drivers need a medical?

The first routine DVLA medical is required as you approach 45 (to renew your Group 2 licence). Then every 5 years until 65, and annually from 65.

How often do taxi and private hire drivers need a medical?

Taxi / PHV medical frequency is set by your licensing council or TfL — commonly a Group 2 standard medical at each licence renewal, more often from age 45 and yearly from 65. Check your renewal letter for the exact date.

How do I know exactly when my medical is due?

Use the checker above: enter your date of birth and licence type (and your last medical date for an exact estimate). It shows your next due date and lets you add a reminder to your calendar. If in doubt, book and our doctor will confirm.
